Sparta Area School District
Nutrition Services Program
The nutrition staff is excited to begin the 2009-2010 school year. Our goal is to have a nutrition program that students are proud of and participate in. The nutrition staff takes pride in knowing that they help students achieve academic excellence by providing nutritious and well balanced meals.
Parents/Guardians are asked to send a prepayment to activate your student(s) account prior to the first day of school. One payment can be made for breakfast, lunch and milk. Prepayments enable us to efficiently serve your student(s) the first day of school.

To apply for free or reduced price meals, fill out a free or reduced meal application. We cannot approve an application that is not complete, so be sure to fill out all required information. Return the completed application in a sealed envelope to your child's school office or the Administration Education Center at 201 E. Franklin Street. You will only need to fill out one application per family. Please list all students in the family on one application, grades pre-school through grade 12. Foster families will need to fill out one application per each foster child. We ask that all families complete this application (one per family) even if you feel you do not qualify. Please list your student(s) name, grade, and school so that we know your family has returned the form. You do not need to list your income if you feel you do not quality.
Any student who was eligible for free or reduced meals at the end of the 2008/2009 school year will remain at that status until a new application is processed on or before October 1, 2009. Note: By October 1, 2009 you will need to complete a new application to be able to continue benefits after this deadline date. Parents/Guardians are responsible for your child's account until the application is processed and you receive a confirmation letter of eligibility. Students will be charged full price until the proper documentation is on file.
The nutrition program uses a computerized lunch cashier system. Each participant is issued a six-digit access number from nutrition services. When you make payments to your account, please make sure to identify all payments by entering your name and access number on your payment. Please remind students to keep their access number confidential. Each student number will work one time in the breakfast and lunch program daily. An adult price will be automatically charged for a second meal. When meal accounts become low (a positive $7.00 or below per student) PreK - 3 grade students will receive a statement from their school office. Students in grades four through twelve will be verbally informed by the nutrition staff of a low balance.
A computerized calling system will be used to call student accounts at home when food service balances are below $3.00. Parents and guardians are responsible to keep positive account balances for their children.
Students/staff are not allowed to use their meal account if the account has no money in it. Student/staff members that do not have money in their meal account will be required to pay cash or bring a meal from home. Office personnel will call the parent or guardian with notification the account is negative.
Breakfast is served daily in each building one half hour before school starts. There are children who are not hungry when they start their day, but by the time they arrive at school they are ready for a nutritious meal to boost their day. There are many nutritious choices to choose from daily. Lawrence Lawson, Southside and Maplewood Elementary Schools will be piloting a Universal Free Breakfast program. (This program will replace the before school breakfast.) The Universal Free Breakfast program is federally funded based on free and reduced populations in these schools.
